Virginia Tech’s FutureHAUS challenged the construction industry by demonstrating the use of advanced manufacturing processes to make an energy positive smart home.

I, alongside another designer Gigi Vera, developed the branding and identity for this project. This included logo design, t-shirt application, and pattern development.

The futureHAUS team won first place at the 2018 Solar Decathlon Middle East. Check out the FutureHAUS website for more information!

The mark itself is based on a 4×4 grid, which is representative of the “16 blocks” of the original town of Blacksburg, Virginia (where the FutureHAUS and Virginia Tech are located).

The form is also similar to that of solar panels.

Additionally, it creates a “square donut” form, which mimics the one possible arrangement of the home’s floorplan (in which a private area and a public area of the home are both facing an internal courtyard).

As another layer of symbolism, this logo incorporates a series of arrows pointing in and out, which embodies the slogan we came up with for the team:

Outside thinking, Inward focus.
